Ozempic is linked to dry mouth through FDA adverse event reports and a 2023 case series, though its prescribing label does not list it. Every periodontal maintenance visit at our London and Somerset offices starts with a medical history review, so tell us if you take Ozempic. Low saliva raises the risk of tooth decay, and the reason your mouth is dry decides what helps.

Is Dry Mouth a Side Effect of Ozempic?

Dry mouth is absent from Ozempic’s FDA label, though researchers have flagged it in reports from patients. The current Ozempic prescribing information lists nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation as the most common side effects, each reported in at least 5% of patients. Dry mouth appears in neither the clinical trial section nor the list of problems reported after the drug went on sale.

Ozempic is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes and is prescribed after a medical evaluation, so it is not the right medication for everyone. Some people take it for weight loss, which falls outside its labeled use.

What does the research on semaglutide and dry mouth show?

Two studies tie semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, to low saliva. A 2023 case series diagnosed three women using semaglutide for weight loss with semaglutide-associated hyposalivation after ruling out other causes. A 2025 Laryngoscope analysis of FDA adverse event reports found a significant reporting signal for dry mouth. Signals show association and cannot prove cause.

Why Might Your Mouth Feel Dry on Ozempic?

Three different things can leave your mouth dry while you take Ozempic, and each one calls for a different response.

Fluid loss from stomach side effects. In Ozempic’s placebo-controlled trials, nausea affected up to 20.3% of patients, compared with 6.1% on placebo, and vomiting and diarrhea were also more common. Most of those reports came while the dose was being raised. The label warns that these side effects can lead to dehydration and advises patients to take precautions against fluid loss. Dehydration and a dry mouth tend to travel together, and NIDCR lists drinking plenty of water as a first step for relief.

A possible effect on the salivary glands. All three patients in the 2023 case series had severe dryness, with sticky mouths and only a little frothy saliva. Researchers have not yet explained how semaglutide might lower saliva flow, and the evidence so far comes from a small number of patients.

Diabetes and other medications. Diabetes and hundreds of common medicines can cause dry mouth on their own, including drugs for high blood pressure and depression. Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, so the dryness may have started with the condition or with another prescription taken alongside the injection.

What Does Dry Mouth Do to Your Teeth and Gums?

Less saliva means less protection against tooth decay, fungal infections, and the plaque that starts gum disease. Saliva works like the rinse cycle on a dishwasher, washing food off your teeth between brushings and carrying minerals that help keep enamel strong. When the flow drops, leftover food and bacteria stay put, and NIDCR notes that a persistently dry mouth raises the risk of decay and fungal infections.

Plaque left along the gumline irritates the gums. Early irritation shows up as redness, puffiness, and bleeding, the same signs that mark gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.

Dry mouth is one of several oral changes people report while taking Ozempic. Our overview of Ozempic teeth covers the rest, from sensitivity to gum irritation.

How Can You Relieve Dry Mouth While Taking Ozempic?

Most relief comes from replacing moisture and protecting your teeth while you and your prescriber work out the cause. NIDCR recommends a handful of simple habits:

  • Sip water throughout the day, and ask your prescriber how much fluid is right for you
  • Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless candy to get saliva flowing, since xylitol products may also help prevent cavities
  • Cut back on caffeine, which can dry out the mouth
  • Skip tobacco and alcohol
  • Run a humidifier at night

Recommended: Saliva substitutes and dry mouth rinses that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Ask us which type fits your mouth at your next visit.

Keep taking Ozempic as prescribed, and raise the dryness with the doctor who prescribed it. Any change to the medication is their call.

Red flags for your prescriber:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that does not go away, which the Ozempic label asks patients to report
  • Feeling dizzy or light-headed along with stomach side effects

Red flags for your periodontist:

  • Mouth sores or cracked lips
  • A burning or itchy feeling in your mouth
  • Gums that bleed, swell, or look redder than usual
  • Bad breath that brushing does not fix

How long does Ozempic dry mouth last?

Researchers have not measured how long Ozempic dry mouth lasts. The label notes that most stomach side effects show up while the dose is being raised, and those are one route to a dry mouth. Dryness that keeps returning despite the steps above deserves a call to your prescriber and a visit to us.

When Should You See a Periodontist About Dry Mouth on Ozempic?

See a periodontist when dryness keeps coming back despite those steps, or when your gums start bleeding, swelling, or pulling back from your teeth. A general checkup can spot trouble, and a periodontist measures how far it has gone.

Every periodontal maintenance visit at Commonwealth Periodontics and Implant Center opens with a review of your medical and dental history, then checks gum pocket depths and tracks changes in the tissue over time. Patients with a history of gum disease usually come in every 3 to 4 months, and a dry mouth gives you one more reason to keep that schedule.

If plaque has already reached below the gumline, scaling and root planing removes plaque and tartar from under the gums and smooths the root surface.

Our team includes Dr. Lucy Belcher, a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology, along with Dr. Susan Ballou Gibson and Dr. William Carroll. You can see a periodontist in London, KY or visit our Somerset office, Monday through Friday.

If you are unsure whether the dryness has reached your gums, a periodontal evaluation measures it.

TL;DR: Does Ozempic Cause Dry Mouth?

  • Dry mouth is missing from Ozempic’s FDA label, yet adverse event reports and a 2023 case series tie semaglutide to low saliva.
  • Fluid loss from nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, a possible salivary gland effect, and diabetes or other medications can each dry your mouth.
  • Low saliva raises the risk of tooth decay, fungal infections, and the plaque that starts gum disease.
  • Sipping water, sugarless gum with xylitol, less caffeine, and a bedroom humidifier ease the dryness.
  • Medication questions go to your prescriber, and gum questions come to us.

If your mouth has felt dry since you started Ozempic, a gum evaluation shows whether it has affected your teeth and gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Wegovy cause dry mouth too?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, and is approved for long-term weight reduction among other uses. Its FDA label also leaves dry mouth off the side effect list. The case series and adverse event signal described above involve semaglutide itself, so the same caution applies to both medications.

Should I stop taking Ozempic if my mouth is dry?

Keep taking Ozempic as prescribed and talk with the doctor who prescribed it. Ozempic is prescribed after a medical evaluation, and any change to the dose or the medication belongs to that doctor. In the meantime, the relief steps above and a dental checkup protect your teeth while you sort out the cause.

Is dry mouth from Ozempic permanent?

Researchers do not yet know how long Ozempic-related dry mouth lasts or whether it fades with time. Tooth damage is a separate question. Early decay can be stopped with fluoride, and once a cavity forms, a dentist has to fill it. Protecting your teeth during the dry stretch matters more than waiting it out.

Does Ozempic cause bad breath?

Bad breath is a common symptom of dry mouth, according to NIDCR, since saliva helps keep mouth bacteria in check. If your breath changed around the time your mouth started feeling dry, mention both at your next visit so we can check for gum irritation and plaque buildup along the gumline.

Can Ozempic damage your teeth?

Dry mouth is the clearest route from Ozempic to dental problems, since low saliva raises the risk of decay and gum irritation. Other reported changes, such as tooth sensitivity, are covered in our Ozempic teeth overview linked above. Regular checkups let us spot changes while they are still small and simple to treat.
